Winner in the nomination "APARTMENT UP TO 50 m2" 2021 INTERIOR + DESIGN
This is an obvious idea: a private interior should reflect the lifestyle and hobbies of the client. The task of the architect, therefore, is to create a space that «mirrors» its owner, helps them to relax and solve professional problems.
This apartment belongs to a young gallery owner, co-founder of the OBDN project. In the past Anna was an architectural photographer, and in her own words she wanted an interior that would be the one built by an architect, not a designer. Which we interpreted as laconic, ergonomic and functional. In addition, the apartment had to be suitable for storing the owner’s art collection.
The 50 m² apartment is located in a brick 11-story residential building with concrete ceilings. It already had the original textures, namely concrete and brick, so we introduced minimal cladding materials to emphasise the roughness and simplicity of the original palette. The height of the ceilings in the apartment is 3 metres. The walls up to the height of the concrete beams were plastered and painted white, while the brickwork and concrete ceiling were left untouched. The floors in the kitchen, bathroom and hallway are of white micro concrete, while the bedroom and living room have wide oak parquet.
To make the small space airy and open, while introducing the option for privacy, it was decided to combine the bedroom with the living room and kitchen and isolate the sleeping area by a multifunctional partition made of stainless steel. The partition incorporates two sliding glass doors, a blue neoprene curtain, a projector screen, a jewellery cabinet and bookshelves. Two walk-in closets and a wall-mounted closet allow for storage without cluttering the apartment space. Some of the furniture was designed and manufactured specifically for the apartment: a closet in the hallway, coffee table, dining table, lamp above it, chairs, bed, metal shelving unit in the dressing room and clothes rail.
